Women of My Soul
Women of My Soul is a film about living between languages set in Margate. It is explored through a slow walk. The walk takes place on Buenos Aires street. Here a group of women, who are artists, writers, and performers share readings of extracts from Isabelle Allende’ s book: The Soul of a Woman: Rebel Girls, Impatient Love, and Long Life. The readings are shared in both English and Spanish.
The film engages in the spaces between languages through extracts from Isabelle Allende’s book. It captures conversations through poetry and site about the evolving and slow pace of change for women through a world view of shared experiences.
This walking performance in Spanglish was made for The Power of Women Festival in Thanet, Kent.
The performance was made with the support of artists, writers and friends who joined me in reading and Isabelle Allende’s book Mujeres del Alma Mía /Women of My Soul
The walk reflects on intercultural histories which are part of migrant identities. At the same time it highlights the experiences that we share as women.
This walk was funded through the Margate Bookie, a literary festival in Margate.
A walk with shared readings that opens up conversations about the evolving and slow pace of change for women through a world view that shares our experiences.
Participants were given handmade ropes and were invited to knot, making quipus, as a record of the walk.
At the end of the walk I attached the ropes to a vara/pole as a record of the walk .
